  Centuries ago the narwhal tusk was sold as unicorn horn and was believed to have magical properties.

  The narwhal tusk is actually a tooth. Soft on the outsite and hard on the inside it can bend without breaking.

to bend - bent - bent =  a(se) indoi

Starfish have no brain or blood. They use sea water to transport food and oxygen in their bodies. Starfish have eyes at the end of their arms. They don't see very well but they can detect the difference between night and day.

There are over 2000 species of shrimp spread all over the world, from the Tropics to the Antartic Ocean. Most shrimp is smaller than a thumbnail but there are species that grow larger than a loaf of bread.

thumbnail = unghia de la degetul mare

The orca is not a whale. It is actually part of the dolphin family because unlike whales the orcas have teeth and use echolocation. Orcas have a very complex language and diffrent dialects.

dialects = dialecte
unlike = spre deosebire de

Seaturtles can hold their breath for up to five hours. Their heart can slow one beat each 9 minutes. Sea turtles travel long distances using the Earth's magnetic field for navigation.

  Manta rays are gentle, graceful and friendly creatures. They feed on plankton and have a very large brain. Manta rays have been observed flying out of the water. They jump up to 3 meters high.

manta ray= pisica de mare

gentle= gentil/ bland

graceful= plina de gratie/ gratios

  Crabs can walk on any direction but can only run sideways. Because crabs have an exoskeleton they have to leave the old shell and make a bigger one when they grow.

sideways= in lateral

Sea urchins do not have bones but they have a hard shell made of five  segments that surround their soft body like the slices of an orange. Sea urchin's favourite food are algae. They chew them with their five teeth that can move independently.

sea urchin= arici de mare

shell= carapace

to chew(ed)= a mesteca

  Squid skin has specialized cells called chromatophores used to change color. When threatened squids eject a special ink that confuses their attacker.

squid= calamar

to eject(ed) =a ejecta

Pufferfish do not have scales, their skin is rough and some have spines. They can change color to blend in the environment. When threatened, the pufferfish swallows a lot of water increasing their size threefold.

pufferfish = peste balon

threefold= de trei ori

Clownfish take good care of the anemone they live in. They remove parasites and protect it from predators. The male clownfish is a very caring parent. He protects the eggs and fans the water with his fins to increase the oxygen around them.

to fan (ed) = a ventila

to increase (ed) = a creste

fin = aripioara de peste

cuttle fish = sepia

  Although most dolphin species live in salt water, there are 5 species that live in freshwater. Dolphins sleep with half their brain. The other half keeps an eye open and is alert to their surroundings.

although= cu toate ca

  Jellyfish have no brains, bones, blood or heart. There is a species of jellyfish that is practically immortal. Jellyfish appeared before fish, insects, trees, flowers and long before dinosaurs.

Sharks grow new teeth all the time. Throughout thier lives  they grow thousands of teeth. Sharks appeared on the Earth before dinosaurs and they survived all 5 mass extinctions.

throughout = pe parcursul...

extinction = disparitie

The luminous lure used by the anglerfish glows due to bioluminescent bacteria. Only the female anglerfish have a lure. They can catch fish twice their size.

lure = momeala/nada

to glow = a straluci

due to = datorita/ din cauza

anglerfish = peste unditar

The seahorse has a prehensile tail that is used to cling to plants or dance with other  seahorses. The seahorse can change color to blend in the enviroment and for their mating dance.

prehensile= intortocheat/ spiralat

to blend(ed)= a (se) amesteca

to cling- clung-clung= a se agata

Homework - to be checked

words x 2

- build up 5 questions from the texts above and give their answers- comment on the blog
